Modern Atlantis

And so the myth goes
that there was once a bustling metropolitan
in the Jersey sea:
a population of several million
skyscrapers, taxis, billboards, helicopters
and an artificial rock garden;
no honking signs that no one obeyed
and a city centre, a meet-up place,
a giant square, with crosswalks
and half-naked men promoting gay rights;
tour buses and overpriced restaurants,
high-end boutiques; not to mention
United Nations headquarters;
stock markets, recording studios,
incomplete without confused seagulls.

Then one day came, and they were
swallowed, a hole left in the Earth
where New York used to be.
